The Best Rap Groups of All Time: My Top 5

Updated: Dec 24, 2020

Here’s my top 5 rap groups of all time. Most of them will be in the late ‘80s to the 2000. That’s pretty much what hip hop and rap I listen to so obviously it will be biased!

Wu-Tang Clan

The Wu-Tang clan has been around for ages. Their music surpasses the hands of time. They were the first group to say that while they are group, they give creative leeway to the members to record solo albums even if it with a different music label. Their lyrics are powerful and the music and beats are amazing. Plus RZA, Ghost Face Kila and Methodman are AWESOME!! 🥰

A Tribe Called Quest

Tribe is a 3 man rap group Q-Tip, Phife Dog, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. They were heavily influenced by jazz beats and were extremely creative with their music as well as in their videos. Q-Tip did quite a few cameo appearances and verses on numerous other groups music and videos. They are from New York and that shows in their videos. Q-Tip is on my list of my favorite old skool rappers. (fRIP Phife Dog.)

Beastie Boys

The Beastie Boys have been one of the first all white rappers to break into the hip hop scene. With their wittines, to their unique and sometime bizarre videos and their out of the box rapping style AdRock, MCA and Mike D were true visionaries. Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest was on the Bestie Boys album Ill Comunication on the song “Get It Together.” Till this day that is by far one of my favorite concerts EVER! (RIP MCA)

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony

In my opinion, Bone does not get the credit they deserve. Hailing out of Cleveland, (my home state) and founded by the infamous Easy-E from NWA, they were the last group he signed before his untimely death. The members are Lazie Bone, Krazie Bone, Bizzy Bone, and Wish Bone with Flesh and Bone. They had a unique sound from the mid-west and coming out in middle of the East Coast/West Coast war where there were two distinct sounds really set them apart from the East/West war that was full blown just before and after Tupac and Biggie were killed. All the members of Bone have amazing speed on their raps, they talk about real life stuff and have withheld the hands of time.

N.W.A

N.W.A, was a controversial rap group who spit some hardcore raps about what was going on in the community they lived in. Hailing from South Central LA (Compton area) they were the band who released “Fuck the Police” which was by far their most iconic song. With the members Easy-E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, MC Ren, DJ Yella, The D.O.C. and Arabian Prince, they ultimately broke up due to musical indiscretions. Easy-E broke off and started his own record label “Ruthless Records.” Ice Cube went solo. Dr. Dre and the D.O.C signed with Death Row Records where Dre started his true producer life. MC Ren released 4 studio albums since N.W.A. broke up. DJ Yella stayed close to Eazy-E and produced many songs in his post N.W.A career. The Arabian Prince began a solo career He left N.W.A. over royalty and contract disagreements. (RIP Easy-E)
