There are so many killer hip hop albums out there so this was pretty challenging to narrow it down to my Top 5. Here are my choice:
2Pac “Me Against the World
This album was a no brainer for me due to my love for Tupac. It captures Tupac in his prime with out calling out his East Coast nemesis. The two sides of his personality are showcased beautifully on this album. He can be vulnerable at one moment and socially combative at another. As always his lyrics are poignant, emotional, and speak honestly about the worlds problems. Top tracks on this album include “Dear Mama”, “Me Against the World”, and “So Many Tears.” If you are going to buy only one album on my list, get this one. You can thank me later. 😉
Wu-Tang Clan - “Enter the Wu-Tang”
This introductory, 12 track album shows off the amazing skills each of the nine members posses. The bar was set high with this album and challenged other hip hop artists trying to imitate them. The essential tracks on this album are “C.R.E.A.M.“ and “Protect Ya Neck.“
The Notorious B.I.G. - ”Ready to Die”
This album is what propelled Biggie into the limelight. His quick and meticulous flow and unmistakable lyrics are showcased on this album. He told tales from the streets so distinctly that the listener feels like they were there experiencing it. Essential tracks from this album are “Juicy,” “Big Poppa,” and “Ready to Die.“
Dr. Dre - “The Chronic”
The Chronic was a huge game changer for the world of hip hop. Producing the new “G Funk” sound and style was something that had never been used before. This unique sound and with the help of Snoop Dog and RBX changed the sound of hip hop and this album became a household name. Essential tracks on this al are “Nuthin but a G Thang“ and “Let Me Ride.”
A Tribe Called Quest - “Midnight Marauders”
Its truly a task for me to pick my favorite Tribe album, but with a lot of pondering “Midnight Marauders” made the cut. This album showcases their jazz-hip hop style better than any other. This album is unquestionably Tribe at their best. Essential tracks on this album are ”World Tour & “Electric Relaxation.”
