Early 2000’s: Top 5 Songs

Updated: Jan 1, 2021

There was some really good tunes during the early 2000s. I’m doing my top 5 and my top 5 honorable mentions at the end.

1) Amy Winehouse - Rehab

Amy Winehouse was a powerhouse singer and it is so sad she left us so early. This song, while having a catchy, upbeat melody, is really quite sad. It’s about her substance abuse issues and everyone telling her to get help. If only she had gone to rehab one last time, she might still be her doing her thing.

2) OutKast - Hey Ya!

This song came on the OutKast double disk Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. This is my least favorite OutKast album, but both André 3000 and Big Boi did make some really good songs on it. Hey Ya! was likely the most well known song on either of the discs. André 3000 was inspired by bands such as The Ramones and The Smiths for this song that he started writing during the Stankonia tour. (Which, indecently, I saw in CincinnatI, Ohio. Ludacris was the opener and the whole show was freaking fantastic!) Hey Ya! was the first song to ever reach 1 million paid downloads. In iTunes’ first year in existence, it was the most downloaded song. Hey Ya! made Rolling Stone’s list of Greatest Songs of All Time along with countless other best of the decade lists. That says a lot for this song!

3) Lady Gaga - Poker Face

Lady Gaga is one far out chick but she can sure make extremely memorable music. Poker Face is highly danceable but quite bizarre. She is definitely a standout among other musicians of the time. Her unique style all around was something Madonna-esque but somehow even more scandalous. Poker Face climbed into the top 10 on the Billboard Top 100 list as her first single Just Dance was ranked at #5 on the top 100. She thus became the first solo female lead artist to have her first two chart entries appear in the top 10 simultaneously, since Ciara achieved the same feat with Goodies and 1, 2 Step in December 2004. Pretty amazing stuff!

4) Usher - Yeah!

Usher teamed up with Lil John and Ludacris to make this amazingly danceable song. The video showcases Usher’s magnificent dance skills and awesome voice. Plus he’s ealay on the eyes! Anyone wanna do the Thunder Clap with me?

5) Jay-Z - ‘Izza (H.O.V.A.)

Jay-Z is an extremely talented rapper, writer, and performer. Unless you dig really, really hard you likely will not find a song of his that you don’t like, even if it’s just a small like. “Hova" refers to what Jay-Z calls his "God Name," which is "Jay-Hova," as in Jehovah. This song is more or less an autobiography about his life startting off as a drrug dealerr in Brooklyn bur deciding to move his drug opperation to Virginia and Maryland where his profits would be higher. The money he made allowed him to finance his first record and establish Roc-A-Fella Records. That was one extremely lucrative drug selling gig he had going!
